RPGs are known for their sprawling worlds filled with opportunities and secrets that can easily be overlooked, but for one developer working on Avowed, that’s exactly what defines the genre’s essence.
Lately, it seems there’s a growing craze for completing every little aspect of video games—thanks in part to the allure of trophies and achievements, which can often justify countless hours dedicated to exploring every nook and cranny. However, if we think back a little, we’ll remember that players often missed out on a lot. And according to Berto Ritger, region director and senior area designer at Obsidian Entertainment, this very aspect is what makes RPGs so captivating. In a chat with GamesRadar about Avowed’s upcoming release, Ritger expressed, “The heart of RPGs lies in their missable content. It adds a layer of personalization to your gaming experience, molding it around how you uniquely engage with the game.”
Ritger sees these varied experiences as a bridge for conversation, noting, “It’s like when you say to someone, ‘I stumbled upon this hidden spot under the docks, there’s this intriguing secret on the eastern side. And, oh, you can even climb up and discover more at the top.’ If you happen to find that while your friend discovers something entirely different, it sparks fascinating discussions about the game.”
That’s not to say the game doesn’t guide you towards key elements. Ritger clarifies, “We have certain things we absolutely want you to discover. For instance, the towering lighthouse is designed to draw your gaze—it’s big, it’s prominent, and naturally, players are inclined to explore it. We encourage that curiosity. Feel free to scale it and leap into the ocean if you wish. Essentially, we want these features to capture your attention.”
I must admit, I sometimes yearn for those days when every game wasn’t laid bare to us, inviting us to rediscover enjoyment in discussing newly uncovered features with friends. If you’re considering diving into Avowed, maybe embrace the unexpected paths. Who knows what hidden gems you might stumble upon?
