Sony, although it swiftly ceased support for the PS Vita, still regards the handheld device as a significant advancement in portable gaming technology. Celebrating PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, Sony highlights its mission to deliver “console-quality” gaming in a sleek, compact form on a dedicated webpage.
In terms of the PS Vita’s total sales, Sony has remained tight-lipped. Despite its eventual downfall, this handheld system arguably paved the way for future gaming innovations. Sony stands by the notion that the PS Vita introduced “revolutionary new features” to gamers around the world and boasted a strong and varied lineup when it first launched.
“Delivering a genuine console experience to gamers on-the-go required miniaturized innovations, from player interaction methods to creating a synchronized ecosystem with home PlayStation consoles,” Sony explained.
Interestingly absent from the discussion is any concrete tally of the PS Vita’s lifetime sales—a number Sony has never made public. In contrast, its predecessor, the PSP, achieved sales well over 80 million units, a milestone Sony proudly showcases on the same webpage.
Unofficial estimates suggest that the PS Vita sold between 15 to 16 million units. Given these figures, Sony’s withdrawal from the portable gaming sphere isn’t entirely unexpected.
Nevertheless, there’s optimism on the horizon. Rumors from trustworthy sources suggest that Sony may be gearing up to re-enter the handheld gaming scene, spurred by the success of their recent release, the PS Portal.
