Helldivers 2 has just launched a new Major Order, and whether you’re nursing wounds from the last challenge or have just hopped back into the game via Steam after a long hiatus, there’s something important to notice. This isn’t just about your immediate objectives—it’s also about what doors they might open.
Following the previous Major Order, where we saw the Democracy Space Station make a grand comeback in the fight against the Illuminate, we’re now heading back to the ever-familiar bug battles. Of course, if you’re an avid bugdiver, you probably never left.
On the surface, the new Major Order might seem pretty standard: collect 22 million common samples from Erata Prime, snag 15 million of the rare ones from Gacrux, and ensure Super Earth has control over Fenrir III—all within four days. However, it’s the underlying purpose of these tasks that piques interest. The aim is to develop technology to combat “The Gloom,” that infamous spore cloud lingering in sectors dominated by Terminids. Beyond requiring your ship to have fog lights, this cloud might hold unexpected potential.
Recent developments suggest exciting possibilities. “Testing on Terminids with Gloom spores has led to mutations that significantly increase Element 710 yields,” reads Arrowhead’s extended report. Experimentation shows yields can soar up to tenfold. “These findings are monumental,” the briefing elaborates, hinting that The Gloom might be an untapped powerhouse of energy. Such a discovery could leapfrog Faster-Than-Light travel capabilities beyond just military and colonial use, branching into trade and research.
There’s a chance this tech might expand Super Earth’s arsenal beyond just the Democracy Space Station. But it could also result in chaos, perhaps unleashing stronger bugs, maybe as part of some failed Gloom mutation experiments. Who knows?
In Helldivers 2, unpredictability is the only certainty. It may very well be a bit of both outcomes. Let’s just stay tuned and brace ourselves for what comes next.
