Pixelity, a South Korean game development studio, has exciting news for fans of the iconic 1990s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. They’re currently crafting an XR (Extended Reality) game that will resonate with anyone who loved the original series aired in 1995.
In a recent blog post, Pixelity announced that it had secured an official licensing deal with Studio Khara, the renowned Japanese animation studio. This partnership paves the way for a game that will unfold in three comprehensive parts, drawing inspiration from all 26 episodes of the beloved anime. The team is already hard at work on the first installment, with its release slated for 2026.
For the devoted Evangelion enthusiasts out there, the series hardly needs an introduction. In a nutshell, it revolutionized the anime landscape in Japan during the ’90s and became a cornerstone of pop culture, inspiring many anime creators in its wake.
The anime is set in a then-futuristic 2015, with a gripping storyline centered on Shinji Ikari. He is tasked with piloting Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine, which stands as the last hope for humanity against the mysterious ‘Angels’ threatening Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity hasn’t disclosed the platforms for the upcoming game yet, they promise an engaging XR experience. Players will get to roam through various locations, following the same timeline and major events as in the original series, all while tasked with completing missions and battling foes.
What’s more, the game will incorporate collaborative gameplay, allowing players to engage with some of their favorite characters from Evangelion. This is definitely going to appeal to fans of the franchise. Pixelity aims to deliver a unique and immersive experience that hallmarks the action-adventure genre.
Since its inception in 2017, Pixelity has produced several VR titles, such as Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also developing two additional VR games, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls, both currently underway.
Though this isn’t Evangelion’s first foray into the VR realm, it marks the first official home-based game of its kind. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco’s VR studio ‘Project i Can’ launched a four-player VR experience titled Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, which was available for a limited time at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan.
