Marathon Arrives on Xbox This September: Everything We Know So Far

Bungie’s new game, Marathon, a sci-fi shooter full of strategic extraction missions, just received its first public showcase. The studio released an exciting gameplay teaser alongside a cinematic short that dives deep into the Marathon universe.

And mark your calendars, folks—Marathon is set to hit Xbox Series X|S on September 23, 2025.

In Marathon, you’ll step into the role of a Runner—a mercenary who’s enhanced with advanced cybernetic abilities. Each Runner is designed with a set of unique skills, allowing you to choose whether you want to charge in blazing or adopt a more sneaky, tactical approach. Customization is key here, too. You’ll tweak your character’s implants and weapons before missions, and you’ll discover even more resources while on the job.

In squads of up to three, you and your teammates will drop into zones with one all-important goal: gather as much loot as you can and make it out alive. Expect to encounter hostile security forces controlled by AI, as well as competing Runner teams. If you survive the mission, all those hard-earned resources are yours to keep for future runs. Up for a solo challenge? You can also go it alone, taking on rival teams and attempting to extract with all the winnings by yourself.

Bungie’s rich history with acclaimed titles like Halo and Destiny 2 brings an experienced touch to Marathon. The game promises not only tight FPS gameplay but also a treasure trove of seasonal content. You’ll unravel mysteries on the surface of Tau Ceti IV and aboard the mystifying, abandoned Marathon ship that drifts above it.

Bungie unveiled a short film directed by award-winner Alberto Mielgo, offering a sneak peek into the gritty reality of Tau Ceti IV, where the game unfolds. Several playable characters from the game make their debut here, setting the stage for the intense action you can expect.
