Today, Nintendo made an exciting announcement: pre-orders for the much-anticipated Switch 2 will open in the United States starting April 24. Sticking to the same pricing plan, the system is set at $449.99, while a special bundle featuring Mario Kart World will be priced at $499.99.
The reason for the delay in US-based pre-orders, which was initiated shortly after the console’s debut announcement, was due to Nintendo wanting to evaluate the potential effects of tariffs and changing market dynamics.
Interestingly, some accessories for the Switch 2 are seeing price adjustments. The Joy-Con 2 controllers, initially marked at $89.99, are getting a slight increase to $94.99, and the Pro Controller price has been raised from $79.99 to $84.99. Other accessory items such as the Switch 2 camera, dock set, wheel set, and charging grips are also experiencing price hikes.
Nintendo indicated that “future price adjustments for any of its products might occur based on market conditions.”
The official launch for the system is still slated for June 5.
Originally, April 9 was earmarked for pre-orders, but plans shifted when Nintendo’s announcement coincided with a broad series of tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump. On that same day, Trump announced a 90-day pause on several tariffs, though the increase on tariffs for Chinese goods remained.
As for game pricing, flagship titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Banaza, the latter of which will be available on July 17, won’t see any price changes. They’re priced at $79.99 and $69.99, respectively.
The Switch 2 promises numerous advancements over its predecessor, featuring a larger HDR-compatible display, an additional USB Type-C port, and an upgraded Nvidia graphics chip.
Set at $449.99, the new price does fall noticeably higher than the original Nintendo Switch, which entered the market at $299.99. This price hike has prompted some fans to call for a reduction during various Nintendo streams.
In light of the delay, Nintendo included in their announcement a heartfelt apology, expressing hope that this resolves some of the uncertainty their customers may be feeling.
