There’s a buzz in the gaming world as a nostalgic throwback is about to hit the shelves. A new retro gaming console, the SuperStation One, is poised for launch, reviving the classic PlayStation One experience through the innovative MiSTer FPGA open-source project. Renowned tech enthusiast and YouTuber, Taki Udon, announced that this console is set to be available on the Retro Remake website, priced at $149. Alongside it, the SuperDock—a nod to the PSone Combo pack—will be offered in a pre-sale for just $5, ultimately aiming for a $35 retail price.
What makes the SuperStation One special is its ability to play PlayStation One games natively, eliminating the need for emulation’s extra processing layers. Gamers will be thrilled to know that it also accommodates original PlayStation One controllers and memory cards, letting them dust off those cherished accessories. As for modern conveniences, the console supports both analog and digital video outputs, making it compatible with anything from an old 13-inch CRT to the latest 85-inch OLED screen. It also packs NFC, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, offering all the bells and whistles of current-gen consoles.
Taki Udon hinted that the SuperDock will introduce disc support, which was not depicted in the initial images. This addition means users can dig into their collection of classic PlayStation One games. The dock itself comes equipped with four USB-A ports and an 2280 m.2 SSD bay for additional storage.
If you’re someone who reminisces fondly about the days of the PlayStation One, whether you’re a millennial or grew up in the Generation X era, this retro console might just be for you. It even presents an opportunity for younger generations to appreciate some of the most iconic games of the past, and perhaps inspire them to dive into the world of gaming preservation.
For $149, you can relive those gaming memories and perhaps introduce them to a new audience. Keep in mind, this price only covers the console itself; you’ll need to supply your own controllers, memory cards, and other peripherals. Should you want the full setup, including expanded memory and CD capabilities, the SuperDock will set you back an additional $35.
All in all, the entire system rounds up to around $184. If you’re willing to add some retro controllers, you can recreate the PlayStation One experience from around $250. And for those looking to go all out, getting a 43-inch CRT television could complete your trip down memory lane in authentic style.
