AMD has officially squashed the rumor that a Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU with a whopping 32 GB of memory is in the works.
Frank Azor Clears the Air About RX 9070 XT’s Memory Capacity
Despite speculations making the rounds, AMD is not planning to release a 32 GB version of the RX 9070 XT. Previously, some buzz from a leaker on Chiphell suggested such a GPU might launch this year, sparking curiosity and discussions among fans. It was even hinted that this GPU would be part of the ‘Gaming’ lineup rather than the PRO family.
All of this speculation can now be dismissed, thanks to AMD’s Frank Azor. He responded directly to a Techpowerup post on X, setting the record straight:
No, the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB capacity.

The Radeon RX 9070 XT will stick with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Given the GPU’s architecture and performance goals, a version with 32 GB wouldn’t have significantly improved gaming performance. Though earlier rumors hinted that such a capacity could appeal to AI applications, it’s clear now that it wasn’t on the cards for gaming.
Historically, AMD hasn’t introduced a gaming GPU with 32 GB of memory, and this decision aligns with their strategy. Offering that much memory on an upper-mid-range GPU would not only be overkill, but it wouldn’t fully utilize the potential either. The RX 9070 XT stands as the flagship model in the upcoming RDNA 4 lineup, built on the Navi 48 GPU, and it’s unlikely we’ll see anything exceeding 16 GB in this series.
Lesser models like the RX 9070 and Navi 44-based cards will naturally have lower specs and performance. As announced, the RX 9000 series will officially premiere on February 28th. This unveiling will provide concrete details about specs, pricing, and the anticipated performance benchmarks straight from AMD.
We can expect these new cards to hit the market in early March. Interestingly, NVIDIA is slated to release the GeForce RTX 5070 GPU around the same period. Azor has previously emphasized that AMD’s 70-class offerings are designed to compete head-to-head with NVIDIA’s similar tier cards. With the RX 9070 XT and 9070 poised against the likes of RTX 5070 Ti or RX 5070, the competition is shaping up to be quite thrilling.
