A seasoned industry analyst believes that if the Nintendo Switch 2 hits the shelves in the first half of 2025, the PlayStation 5 could outsell it in the U.S. According to Mat Piscatella from Circana, we’re looking at several months of supply shortages due to the enormous demand expected for Nintendo’s eagerly awaited next-gen console.
### Can the PS5 Outpace Switch 2 Sales in the U.S. if Supply Meets Demand?
Piscatella didn’t offer a lot of specifics on why he thinks the PS5 might edge out the Switch 2 in its inaugural year beyond hinting at potential supply issues and a possible late 2025 launch for Nintendo. This leaves us pondering whether his projection will hold if Nintendo manages to avoid hardware constraints.
Yet, it’s quite a statement given that the PS5 is already entering the latter part of its lifespan. However, if we see Grand Theft Auto 6 hit the market this year, there’s likely to be a significant uptick in demand for Sony’s console.
“I predict Nintendo’s upcoming hardware will sell around 4.3 million units in the U.S. in 2025 (assuming they launch in the first half of the year), which would make up roughly a third of all video game console sales that year (excluding PC Portables),” Piscatella shared on Bluesky. “The actual number of units sold will clearly depend on their manufacturing and distribution capabilities. Nevertheless, I still foresee the PlayStation 5 leading in total hardware sales in the U.S. throughout the year.”
