Animal Company, a free-to-play early access sensation on Quest, has been riding high as one of the platform’s top earners for weeks, cruising past even the beloved Gorilla Tag. And it seems the Lethal Company-inspired adventure isn’t slowing down any time soon.
Animal Company has achieved what only one other game has—the highly successful Gorilla Tag by Another Axiom was previously the only title to receive over 100,000 user reviews on Quest. Gorilla Tag hit that milestone last March, cementing its status as the platform’s most successful game in terms of both reviews and revenue.
Enter Wooster Games’ Animal Company, bringing Gorilla Tag’s innovative arm-based locomotion into the mix along with thrilling elements from the survival hit Lethal Company. This dynamic blend has helped Animal Company soar past the 100,000 user review mark, a substantial increase from when the studio previously announced surpassing 1 million monthly active users (MAU) just last month. It’s been a rapid ascent for sure.
Just a month ago, Animal Company was at over 60,000 user reviews on the Horizon Store, while Gorilla Tag stood at slightly over 140,000. In the past month, Animal Company has surged to over 108,000 reviews, while Gorilla Tag has only managed to add another 6,000 to its tally in the same period.
Based on data from independent aggregator VRDB, there was a significant spike in user reviews starting in mid-March, hinting at the game’s growing traction.
Should Animal Company keep up this impressive pace, it might soon outshine Gorilla Tag as Quest’s most reviewed game, although there are other factors to consider. Metrics like daily active users (DAU) and MAU are vital, and they’re why Gorilla Tag still holds the crown week after week—though Animal Company isn’t far behind now.
For Wooster, translating this spike in users into revenue growth is crucial. The studio has been silent on its earnings since activating microtransactions in September, so it’s unclear how these numbers translate into profits.
Last month, Wooster Games did tell Road to VR that turning on in-app purchases has put them in “a strong and healthy position.” They noted that since they began monetizing in September, their monthly revenue has consistently doubled since December. The standout stat for them is the rapid growth of their player base—Animal Company now boasts over 1 million MAU, a remarkable fourfold increase since December.
This success comes amid a shift in Quest’s user demographics, driven by the introduction of Quest 3S, Meta’s $300 mixed reality headset. Meta revealed that the rise of free-to-play content and a younger audience has led to a revenue boom, largely from in-app purchases like those in Animal Company and Gorilla Tag.
The pressing question is whether this momentum will sustain long-term engagement and revenue growth. We’re keenly awaiting any financial updates from Wooster Games, which might provide insight into how Quest’s top titles are truly performing. If the earnings are anything like Gorilla Tag’s impressive figures from last June, they might already be in the millions.
