If you love taking your custom Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 mods into online play, there’s some news you might not be thrilled about. Saber Interactive, the developer behind the game, has announced that starting in December, mods will no longer be permitted in public matches due to technical issues affecting even players who don’t use mods themselves.
This change was shared through a candid post on Steam by Space Marine 2’s game director, Dmitriy Grigorenko. He began by assuring fans that the developers are not against mods at all.
“We designed the game to be mod-friendly from the beginning—this is why our game pack files are not encrypted, for instance,” he noted. “It’s always exciting to see our community’s creativity in action. Mods are fantastic and surely add to a game’s lifespan.
“However, maintaining stable gameplay is critical, and we’re committed to enhancing the experience for every player. Our data indicates that a significant number of recent server stability issues stem from mods. This instability affects players not using mods as well. We’ve also had reports of corrupted save files from those gaming alongside mod users.”
Due to these concerns, the forthcoming update in December will block public online sessions for players using mods. However, mods will still be welcomed in private ops lobbies, and custom Eternal War lobbies once they become available.
The primary aim seems to be allowing modders to enjoy mods in their own circles without compromising the experience for players who prefer an unmodded environment. Ideally, this should be a win-win situation.
Of course, not everyone will be content, because this is a change in a video game—when are players ever unanimous about change? But hey, we can hope.
Grigorenko also shared: “We’re creating a user-friendly entry point to our system for games that have mods installed. This way, modders won’t have to spend time modifying the game executable after each update. If we accidentally disrupt this setup for mods in future patches, we’ll repair it. Plus, we plan to release some of our tools to modders to simplify their work.”
Overall, while modders may find it frustrating not to take their creations into public arenas, these updates should make things easier for them behind the scenes. So, dive back into those private skirmishes with your squad.
