The voice actors behind the French version of Apex Legends have reportedly taken a stand against signing a contract that would use their voices for AI training.
Pascale Chemin, the voice of Wraith in the French version of this battle royale game, voiced her concerns on Twitter. She pointed out that their publisher—likely Electronic Arts—had slipped in a contract clause allowing their work to be used for AI model training. While the game and publisher aren’t named directly, all signs seem to point to Apex Legends and EA.
In solidarity, 31 more voice actors from the same project have also declined to sign this agreement. They collectively penned a letter to the publisher, explaining their refusal.
Chemin eloquently stated, “If we don’t unite now to ensure a clause protecting our voices is standard in our contracts—not just for us, but for all video game dubbing studios—then we’re in trouble and disaster is imminent,” as translated by ResetEra.
She continued, “Yes, it may seem impractical to refuse work now, especially when opportunities are scarce for many of us and financial struggles are real. A paycheck is indeed needed. However, we’re being asked to do more than work; we’re being asked to relinquish our skills to train AI systems that could replace us in the future. They’re asking us to agree to something that goes against our own interests, effectively shooting ourselves in the foot by supporting AI.”
