Nintendo Switch Online just got a bit more exciting with the addition of Donkey Kong Land 3, rounding out the complete trilogy from the retro Game Boy era. This marks quite a celebration, as the classic game originally released in 1997 just blew out 27 birthday candles this past October.
The Donkey Kong Land games are a nostalgic reminder of Rare’s productive period before its Microsoft days. Rolling out every year from 1995 to 1997, they’re a testament to that creative streak. Fans were treated to the first Donkey Kong Land on November 22, soon followed by its sequel four days later.
Now, Donkey Kong Land 3 joins the party, landing on Nintendo Switch Online’s shelves this past Wednesday, December 4. For those subscribed to any tier of the service, this means instant access to more Game Boy charm. Just a heads-up, though, this is separate from Donkey Kong Country 3, which had previously graced the SNES platform and joined Nintendo Switch Online back in December 2020.
However, there’s a small hitch. Enthusiasts of Donkey Kong Land 3 on the Switch won’t be experiencing the upgraded Game Boy Color version from 2000. What’s available is the original Game Boy edition, complete with its classic monochrome display. The colorful update would’ve required localization, as it never made it beyond Japan’s shores. Nintendo has been known to localize under certain circumstances, like with F-Zero titles recently, but not regularly.
In the bigger picture, adding DKL3 ascertains the fact that the Switch is evolving into a hub for Donkey Kong titles. Right now, Nintendo Switch Online showcases a whopping ten games from this beloved series, ranging from Donkey Kong Country to quirky titles like DK Jr. Math. Throw in a port of DKC: Tropical Freeze from 2018 and a Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake earlier this year, and the collection continues to impress. Keep an eye out, as Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is on the horizon, slated for a January 16, 2025 release on the hybrid console.
Donkey Kong Land 3 sets the tone for December’s lineup, but it’s not closing the curtain on new releases. The iconic NES Tetris will hit Nintendo Switch Online on Thursday, December 12, potentially wrapping up the year’s additions. This steady drip of classic games showcases Nintendo’s commitment to keeping fans engaged and nostalgic.
