A fresh batch of character revamps for Honkai Star Rail is on the horizon with version 3.4, which aims to reignite interest in certain fan-favorites whose power has waned over time. HoYoverse, the game’s developer, revealed during their latest live stream that Kafka, Silver Wolf, Blade, and Jingliu are set to undergo significant changes. While the studio acknowledged the players’ desire to see these characters become formidable once more, they kept the specifics of the reworks under wraps.
If everything goes according to the usual schedule, we can expect HSR 3.4 to roll out in early July 2025.
When they first came onto the scene in 2023, these four were hailed as some of the game’s elite. Kafka enjoyed a resurgence in 2024 with the introduction of Acheron, but lately, she, along with the others, has struggled to remain impactful. For instance, despite the substantial resources Jingliu requires from players, she doesn’t quite match the damage output of her peers. Likewise, Kafka has been lacking synergy with new damage-over-time characters, a gap particularly felt as Mydei emerged as a Blade alternative.
The phenomenon of previously top-tier characters losing their edge, often referred to as “powercreep,” is a common tale in gacha games like Honkai Star Rail. However, HoYoverse’s titles usually don’t witness such rapid obsolescence. Take Genshin Impact, for instance: characters that shone in its early days still hold their ground on widely-followed tier lists and remain viable in even the toughest challenges. Even Zenless Zone Zero allows players to succeed in boss battles using the initial trio they start with, showcasing a more consistent character viability in these games.
Right now, it seems HoYoverse doesn’t have plans for similar updates to other characters left behind by time, like Bailu, Yanqing, Natasha, Hook, and Welt, unfortunately. Change for them seems unlikely in the near future.
On the bright side, the upcoming version 3.2 will let players select a free 5-star character from either Ruan Mei or Luocha, offering a bit of nostalgia for those looking to expand their roster with veteran faces.
