Indiana Jones has always exuded a unique charm. It’s found not only in its captivating tales, iconic hero, and memorable music but also in the filming style, meticulous choreography, and overall atmosphere. This magical blend has cemented the series’ enduring appeal. Recreating this essence within a video game is no small feat.
This was the critical challenge faced by MachineGames, the developers behind “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.” They set out to craft a modern game that not only stands on its own but also encapsulates the essence of the movies. Much of their task revolved around achieving equilibrium: creating a compelling game that mirrors the look, feel, spirit, and sound of the films that sparked its creation.
Speaking with the team at MachineGames offers fascinating insights into how they accomplished this—melding contemporary game design with classical filmmaking techniques to hit the elusive sweet spot they’ve been aiming for.
One particular scene illustrates the depth of their thought process, an incident one might even consider minor. In “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,” a famed scene unfolds: a menacing swordsman flaunts his skill before a crowd, ready for a showdown. Yet Indy, with a grimace, disarms him with a single, unexpected shot—turning a tense moment into a brilliant punchline. It’s comedic perfection encapsulated.
Initially, such a scene seems improbable in a video game setting. You’d expect a boss fight, complete with attack patterns and health bars. Instead, this very scene highlighted the challenge—and became a clever part of the solution. Axel Torvenius, the Creative Director, explained how the humor intrinsic to Indy’s world became a source of inspiration, infusing combat scenes with wit and charm in addition to strategic depth.
MachineGames’ dedication is evident: they’ve painstakingly captured the magic of Indiana Jones films, even when it doesn’t seem like a natural fit for gaming. And as we delve deeper, it becomes clear that they’ve gone above and beyond.
From the start, they aimed to emulate the look and feel of ’80s cinema. “We wanted to nail down the aesthetic of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ from the get-go,” Torvenius shares. The team scrutinized film details—color palettes, film stock, audio techniques, stunt work—and translated those into a modern game context.
For settings in the game, they studied how the original films orchestrated scene composition, ensuring that despite the free roam nature of games, key scenes were presented as intended. During controlled cutscenes, a Director of Photography was employed to capture movements and compositions evocative of earlier Indiana Jones movies.
Sound design, equally crucial, meant capturing the iconic auditory elements long associated with Indiana Jones—from John Williams’ rousing score to the famous Wilhelm Scream. Audio Director Pete Ward recalls the effort to reproduce these sounds faithfully, even revisiting original sound design techniques from decades ago.
Creating a new soundtrack while respecting the original was key too. Composer Gordy Haab, chosen for his ability to draw inspiration from the legendary John Williams, created new themes that seamlessly blend into this universe. Remarkably, the team recorded at Abbey Road, where the original soundtracks were crafted, even coincidentally enlisting musicians who worked on the original sessions.
Narratively, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” carves out a fresh story that fits snugly between the events of previous films. Lead Narrative Designer Tommy Tordsson Björk discusses the depth of their research into the 1930s setting, bringing authenticity and continuity across different mediums of Indiana’s world.
The game captures cinematic thrills by utilizing motion capture extensively, pressing real-life performance into service to elevate gameplay. Stunt work in some scenes required impressive feats, with cutting-edge motion capture tech creating intense action sequences embodying the look and feel of classic Indiana Jones films.
Every punch and fight sequence was meticulously crafted to be engaging, rewarding, and reflective of Indy’s signature humor. The result is a game that captures the identity and spirit of Indiana Jones—where every element, from environmental detail to gameplay mechanics, adds up to an adventure worthy of the beloved franchise.
“Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is set to release on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC with Game Pass, and on Steam, on December 9. Premium and Collector’s editions offer an early start from December 6, priming eager adventurers for what promises to be a nostalgically thrilling journey through a world filled with mystery, humor, and heart-pounding action.
