If you’re a fan of Hazelight Studios, you’re likely familiar with their knack for creating compelling characters that you and your co-op partner will never forget. Each character brings their own unique personality, backstory, and motivations, leading to some truly memorable moments as their tales unfold.
Hazelight Studios is continuing that legacy with the upcoming release of Split Fiction, set to launch on March 6 on PS5. Here, you’ll take on the roles of Mio and Zoe, two unpublished authors who couldn’t be more different from one another. Lured into the Rader Publishing Headquarters with the tantalizing promise of a book deal, things quickly take a turn for the worse, leaving them trapped in a simulation of their own stories. In this post, we’ll delve into their characters, helping you choose your favorite when you get your hands on the game!
Meet Mio Hudson, a science fiction author whose life in the city with her father has been nothing short of challenging these last few years. She’s not writing for fame or accolades; she’s simply doing it for the money. Her passion for science fiction shines through in her stories, which transport readers to neon-lit cyberpunk cities, desolate weapon factories, and the vastness of space.
Inside the simulations, you’ll see her sci-fi love manifest in impressive abilities: think gravity-defying ninja moves with a razor-sharp energy sword, an uber-cool exosuit to control drones remotely, or double-fisting laser blasters while clad in combat armor from the future.
And then there’s Zoe Foster, the fantasy author with a magnetic personality and an unwaveringly optimistic outlook. Coming from the countryside and striving to prove her worth to her family, Zoe pins all her hopes on landing a book deal. Fantasy is her playground, with stories that tackle towns overrun by trolls, invasions through icy forests, and the quest to save the last surviving dragons.
Her love for all things fantastical unlocks within simulations as well. Watch her transform into a magical shapeshifter flying like a fairy, wielding a mythic sword atop a dragon, or gliding between floating islands with a trusty magical kite.
These characters couldn’t be more different, yet their journey in the simulation forces them to reconcile their differences, unearth hidden aspects of themselves, and ultimately understand that collaboration and friendship are essential to escape.
During the game’s announcement at The Game Awards in December, Hazelight Studios’ Josef Fares shared a personal tidbit: Mio and Zoe are named after his daughters, adding a touching layer to these characters.
So, here’s the question you and your co-op partner need to answer: will you choose Mio or Zoe?
Also making a return is Hazelight’s hallmark feature, The Friend’s Pass. Much like in A Way Out and It Takes Two, this feature lets you invite a friend to join your game online for free, even if they don’t own it. And with plans for crossplay, teaming up with friends is now easier across any platform.
Mark your calendars: Split Fiction arrives on PlayStation 5 on March 6, 2025.
*Please note: To use the Friend’s Pass, both players will need to install it and have a constant internet connection along with the platform account. Only one player needs to own the full game for both to experience it.
