When Lenovo first released its original Legion Go gaming handheld back in mid-2023, it didn’t quite win over the gaming crowd. Fast forward to 2025, and Lenovo is launching three fresh models powered by either the well-known AMD Z1 Extreme processor or the newly introduced Z2.
Meet the Legion Go S, a handheld designed to run on either Windows 11 or SteamOS. This time around, Lenovo has simplified the design by dropping the detachable controllers seen in the previous model, resulting in a lighter device weighing in at just 1.63 pounds. The sleek white version utilizes Windows 11, while the eye-catching “Nebula Violet” color variant is set to operate on Valve’s SteamOS. The latter promises a straightforward, console-like experience, but it does tether users more closely to Valve’s game ecosystem.
Both versions, the Legion Go S and the Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS, are built on the same hardware foundation. Expect to find a robust Z2 or Z1 Extreme processor under the hood, an impressive 8-inch 1920×1200 LCD touchscreen that boasts 500 nits of brightness and a 120 Hz refresh rate, along with a substantial 55.5 WHr battery. You can also pack these machines with up to 32GB of 6400 DDR5 RAM and a massive 1TB of storage. For those in need of more space, Lenovo’s detailed specs confirm support for standard-sized 2280 M.2 SSDs.
In terms of connectivity, the device is equipped with a MicroSD card slot, a pair of USB 4.0 ports at the top, and an audio jack. As for availability, Lenovo has announced that the Windows variant of the Legion Go S is slated for release in January, starting at approximately $729. Meanwhile, the Legion Go – Powered by SteamOS is anticipated in May with a more affordable starting price of $499. Furthermore, additional configurations of the Windows version are expected in May 2025, starting at around $599. According to a representative from Lenovo, consumers should be able to snag a Legion Go S, running either Windows or SteamOS with the same AMD Z2 Go CPU, 16GB RAM, and 1TB storage for $599.
Shifting our focus to the high-end segment, Lenovo unveiled a prototype of the next-generation Legion Go. This model retains the detachable controllers, including that quirky mouse sensor function that lets the right control stick double as an unconventional gaming mouse. The design tweaks include smoother-edged controllers and a circular D-pad. Additionally, the battery capacity has been significantly increased, moving up from 49.2 to a hefty 74 WHr.
The display on this prototype echoes its predecessor at 8.8 inches with a 144 Hz refresh rate, but it now features OLED technology. Lenovo, in a wise move, has adjusted the resolution from 2560×1600 to a more feasible 1920×1200. This touch display also promises 500 nits of brightness and supports variable refresh rates. Built to impress, the second-generation Legion Go is expected to come with a Ryzen Z2 processor, up to 2TB of storage, and 32GB of blisteringly fast 7500 MHz RAM, arriving sometime in 2025. At the time of writing, the port selection for this model was still under wraps.
