ILM and Lucasfilm are crafting yet another immersive journey set in the universe of Star Wars, aptly titled Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset.
This new adventure is being prepared exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 and 3S platforms. It promises to immerse players in a timeline closely connected to the events of Han Solo’s backstory as showcased in the 2018 film, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Although details are currently sparse, there’s a buzz of excitement around the possibility of engaging in the thrilling world of podracing. According to ILM, the game invites you on an exhilarating ride where players can encounter and team up with famed podracer Volo Bolus while aligning themselves with the iconic figure Sebulba for a mixed reality experience that’s poised to set hearts racing.
The term "Playset" seems to hint at a collection of mixed reality mini-games, though ILM hasn’t confirmed much beyond the tantalizing tidbit above.
True to form, ILM is known for its methodical approach, gradually unveiling key characters and segments of their XR games as the launch draws near. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on an official release date or any teasers for this eagerly awaited title.
Fans won’t have to wait indefinitely, however. During the ‘Star Wars Celebration 2025’ taking place in Tokyo, Japan, from April 18th to 20th, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience the game firsthand. Over a dozen demo stations are planned, which will also feature demos from ILM’s previous VR masterpieces like Vader Immortal and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.
Now, you might wonder, why venture into mixed reality? Jose Perez III, the director behind Star Wars: Beyond Victory, offers some insights. He claims that mixed reality pushes the boundaries of immersion, allowing them to bring the far-flung galaxies of Star Wars straight into the homes of fans in an unprecedently tangible way.
Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that Meta’s support has likely played a significant role in advancing this mixed reality venture, as it has with past VR Star Wars projects from ILM.
