One of the more captivating additions to the world of The Witcher 3 mods has just been introduced, blending a beloved game with a fascinating new twist. Remember when someone gave Geralt a Kiryu-inspired back tattoo? Well, now you can actually ride a dragon, much like the Dragonborn does after traveling to Solstheim in Skyrim.
Reflecting on the slew of amazing Witcher 3 mods we explored last year, from brand-new quests and an unexpected voyage on a ship—with the risk of falling through the deck—to the chance to play as Ciri in her anticipated Witcher 4 attire, it’s clear these innovations wouldn’t exist without the ever-useful REDkit tools.
The mod in question is called ‘Herald of the White Frost,’ crafted by the talented errornoaccess. This creator is also responsible for the quirky centaur horse-man Geralt mod, which provided me with several hours of entertainment last November. Their imaginative creations include mounts like griffins, fiends, and surprisingly, White Orchard’s alchemist Tomira.
Their latest work introduces a “custom dracolizard monster,” only accessible after a thrilling boss fight. Once victorious, you can soar on its back—mirroring our nostalgic attempts at Skyrim’s dragon riding, an experience many of us had tried and then swiftly forgot about.
If you’re eager to meet this dragon—known as Unhcegila, the Herald of the White Frost—you’ll find it in a frozen town during the portal-hopping adventure ‘Through Time and Space,’ in White Orchard. Alternatively, summon it with a “Mysterious Sapphire Crystal” available from four merchants, details provided in the mod’s description.
Following the battle, which seems quite challenging based on comments from early adopters, you’ll earn the “Horn of the Frozen Flame.” This item allows you to call upon the dragon for a ride, supposedly by equipping it like a torch, reminiscent of the centaur mod’s mechanics. Expect a brief tutorial to guide you through the dragon riding controls on your first flight.
