Nintendo’s latest video reveal for the Switch 2 is generating even more buzz on YouTube than Sony’s highly anticipated PlayStation 5 announcement. This surge in views reflects the massive interest and excitement surrounding Nintendo’s next-generation console.
After years of swirling rumors and speculation, Nintendo finally answered fans’ prayers with the official announcement of the Switch 2 on Thursday, January 16. This trailer, a two-minute glimpse into what’s to come, highlighted the new console’s features and teased another installment in the Mario Kart series, leaving fans hyped and eager for more.
Just three days since its debut, the trailer has already garnered 18.78 million views, complete with over a million likes, outpacing Sony’s PS5 announcement, which had a similar number of likes but racked up 18.14 million views three days after its mid-June 2020 release. As of early 2025, the PS5 announcement has accumulated 44 million views and 1.6 million likes. At its current pace, the Switch 2 teaser could soon surpass these figures, at least in terms of likes.
Despite the Switch 2’s roaring success, it’s still trailing the original Switch trailer’s performance from October 2016, which managed to hit 19.5 million views within just two days—an impressive feat, though that video was subsequently pulled from the site, according to reports by VGC.
This overwhelming online engagement highlights the vast anticipation for Nintendo’s new console. Nintendo seems acutely aware of this momentum. Recent analyst predictions suggest that the company is planning to roll out around 20 million units within the first year, a significant 25% increase compared to the original Switch, which faced supply challenges both at its release and again during the pandemic in 2020.
To build on this excitement, Nintendo has scheduled a series of pop-up preview events around the world in April, May, and early June 2025. Before these events, a special Nintendo Direct is planned for April 2, dedicated to the Switch 2. This broadcast is expected to reveal key details such as the launch date, pricing, and initial lineup of games. Some rumors indicate the console might be priced around $449, which would represent a significant price hike over the original.
