NVIDIA has recently shed light on their collaboration in developing a custom processor for the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. According to the tech giant, this next-gen console is set to boast graphics capabilities that are a whopping ten times more powerful than its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch.
At the heart of this enhancement is an NVIDIA GPU outfitted with RT Cores and Tensor Cores. These components are pivotal in delivering breathtaking visuals and smart, AI-fueled enhancements. While the Tensor Cores focus on elevating AI-driven graphics with remarkable efficiency in power use, the RT Cores significantly boost the realism of games with dynamic lighting and authentic reflections.
Playing in Handheld Mode promises to be a flawless experience, free from screen tearing, thanks to NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology which allows for a variable refresh rate.
NVIDIA elaborated in a blog post, highlighting that an impressive 1,000 engineer-years have been dedicated to refining every aspect of the console—from system and chip design to creating a bespoke GPU, fine-tuning application programming interfaces (APIs), and developing top-tier tools for game developers. These efforts culminate in the Nintendo Switch 2’s substantial improvements.
The new console is set to support up to 4K gaming when docked, while in handheld mode, it will deliver up to 120 frames per second at 1080p. Moreover, it supports high dynamic range and features AI upscaling, which enhances visuals and smoothens gameplay.
Delving deeper, NVIDIA further explained that the new RT Cores facilitate real-time ray tracing for incredibly life-like lighting, reflections, and shadows, which in turn creates more immersive gaming worlds. The Tensor Cores, on the other hand, empower features such as Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which elevates resolution for crisper details without compromising image quality. These cores also support AI-driven functionalities like face tracking and background removal during video chats, enriching social gaming and streaming experiences.
Gamers can expect the Nintendo Switch 2 to hit stores worldwide on June 5, 2025, with a price tag of £395.99 ($449.99).
