Path of Exile 2 is making its debut later today, and it appears that the early-access sales are absolutely on fire. In fact, they’ve been so successful that Jonathan Rogers, the game director, has put out a video message to fans, giving them a heads up about potential login queues once the servers are live.
In the video, Rogers shares some insights about what the over one million and still increasing number of players might encounter as they try to access the game at launch.
“We’ve just reached a staggering one million Early Access redemptions,” he announced in the video. “The overwhelming support you all have shown for Path of Exile 2 Early Access has far surpassed our wildest expectations. However, we want to be completely transparent with you and inform you that queues are almost inevitable over the weekend.”
Rogers admits, “This is obviously fantastic news, but it does come with its own set of challenges. Expect queues during the launch weekend. When we initially ordered server capacity, we honestly didn’t foresee a million players logging in simultaneously. We’ve since ordered significant cloud capacity, and those servers will be coming online soon, yet I am concerned about potential issues on the back end.”
Continuing, he reflects, “We quite frankly aren’t sure what our back-end services can manage once we surpass a million users. We’ve added more data shards and scaled up everything we possibly can, but we’re not entirely sure where our limits are. We honestly never anticipated things to get this huge during early access.”
He wraps up his message with, “I just want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone for believing in this project. If we encounter server issues at launch, please know that we’ll be working tirelessly to resolve them. Thank you so much, guys.”
Dealing with login queues is about as classic an online gaming issue as they come, but the silver lining here is that PoE2 has blown past Grinding Gear Games’ expectations. It’s wonderful to see, especially since the team has developed what looks to be a stellar sequel to an already outstanding ARPG.
