The PlayStation VR2 recently experienced a significant boost in its holiday sales on Amazon US, thanks to a remarkable discount that took many by surprise. The headset sold nearly five times the amount compared to last year’s figures during the same season.
This surge in purchases was largely driven by a hefty 42% discount on the Horizon bundle, which slashed the price from $550 down to $350. As expected, such a substantial price cut drew in many buyers, yet the sales exceeded expectations, hitting nearly five times the peak sales volume during the 2024 holiday season compared to 2023.
Now, it’s worth noting that in the previous year, the PSVR 2 didn’t see any major sales push during the holiday period. Naturally, when you drop the price of a product by almost half, you might anticipate increased sales—perhaps by 50%. However, what we witnessed with PSVR 2 was a much more dramatic correlation between the discount and sales, suggesting a unique market dynamic at play.
Interestingly, Sony launched this sale well before Black Friday and extended it into the new year. The extended sale period hints at an intention to clear out existing stock. This could indicate the possibility of a new SKU or a revamped, more affordable version in the pipeline. While some speculate that Sony might be losing confidence in the headset, possibly liquidating inventory before a potential discontinuation, our take is that Sony will likely keep the PSVR 2 around at least until the next console cycle. Even if it doesn’t become a major focus for Sony in the interim, it’s too soon to count it out completely.
