Showtime is once again diving into the world of Dexter with a brand-new prequel series called Original Sin, and the much-anticipated first trailer has finally dropped.
Although Dexter concluded over a decade ago, the era of reboots and beloved intellectual properties being resurrected is in full swing. In 2022, we got the sequel series Dexter: New Blood, set a decade after the original show’s finale. Now, Paramount and Showtime have unveiled the first glimpse of this upcoming prequel series: Dexter Original Sin. But before you dive into the trailer and read further, be warned—there are spoilers related to the ending of New Blood, as the prequel intriguingly ties into that sequel. Consider yourself cautioned!
The trailer presents a few striking scenes from New Blood’s conclusion, with Dexter lying motionless in the snow, a pool of blood circling him after being shot by his son, Harrison. While he receives treatment at the hospital, his life seemingly flashes before his eyes, setting the stage for this prequel journey. According to the official plot, “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) as he evolves from a student into an avenging serial killer. As his bloodthirsty urges become impossible to suppress, Dexter must learn to harness his darker inclinations.”
With the guidance of his father Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater, Dexter adopts a Code meant to help him eliminate those deemed unfit for society, all while staying off law enforcement’s radar. This becomes quite a challenge for young Dexter as he begins an internship in forensics at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Narration from original Dexter star Michael C. Hall ties us back to familiar roots, and fans will be thrilled to see a guest appearance by none other than Buffy’s Sarah Michelle Gellar. While we can safely predict no drastic plot twists for Dexter—considering it’s a prequel—it still promises to be an entertaining journey.
Additionally, this series might just answer lingering questions from Dexter’s fate at the end of New Blood. As a follow-up sequel, Resurrection, looms on the horizon, it wouldn’t be shocking if the prequel concludes with Dexter waking up hale and hearty. But you’ll have to wait until the show’s debut on December 13th on Paramount+ to find out!
