Most fans seem to think that the Scream series might be over after Melissa Barrera’s exit. Despite this, Spyglass Entertainment and Paramount Pictures are forging ahead with a revamped seventh installment, which is set to bring back Sidney Prescott and introduce her family to intense pain and trauma. In an exciting development, Isabel May has been cast as her daughter.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed this news, suggesting the series might be leaning into the ‘legacy sequel’ approach to reclaim some of its lost appeal. While the Barrera situation might not faze the general audience too much, Jenna Ortega’s absence could be a bigger blow for casual fans.
Isabel May, known for her roles in “1883” and “Young Sheldon,” is in discussions to join the project, which should start filming soon as it aims for a February 27, 2026 release. Kevin Williamson, who wrote the scripts for Scream 1, 2, and 4, is stepping into the director’s role. Interestingly, the script is penned by Guy Busick again; he co-wrote 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream 6. Although Radio Silence had planned to leave after the last film, Christopher Landon of “Happy Death Day” fame was set to take over until significant reworking occurred due to behind-the-scenes issues.
The 2022 film was aimed at breathing new life into the franchise without opting for a reboot, considered by many as a legacy sequel with a unique spin and some clever commentary on Hollywood’s trends. Meanwhile, Scream 6 headed in a vastly different direction, met with a generally positive reception. Some fans are eager to welcome Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott back, even if it means she’s never far from the Ghostface killers.
As for the Carpenter sisters, played by Barrera and Ortega, their storyline wraps up in just two movies—unless circumstances bring them back into the action years down the line. Scream 6’s conclusion offers a satisfactory end to their personal saga, leaving horror fans with an easy exit if they’re not on board with this latest change.
