Paramount and Sega surprised us today by unveiling a fresh trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and to everyone’s surprise, it includes a nod to Pokemon.
It’s been a few months since the initial trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made its debut. With the movie’s release just around the corner, anticipation has been building, and fans have been anxiously awaiting another glimpse. Today, that anticipation is rewarded with the drop of the second official trailer, and it includes a fun twist: a kid asks if Tails is Detective Pikachu. This amusing exchange was unexpected, left me pleasantly surprised, and sparked my imagination about what a crossover between these two worlds might look like.
The trailer has left viewers wondering if we’ll see Sonic characters battling Pokemon. Personally, I doubt Sonic would opt for Shaymin just because it’s a hedgehog; a choice like Jolteon seems more fitting, given its speed and ‘cool’ vibe. Or perhaps the fun will come from a scenario imagining Knuckles as a Pokemon. It’s anyone’s guess, but it’s a delightful trailer that notably showcases a Chao themed restaurant visited by Team Sonic—a highlight, in my opinion. There’s also a poignant moment featuring a match cut of Shadow with future-dead-girl Maria—a real tearjerker for those of us who’ve grown attached to the Sonic characters over the years.
Of course, there’s plenty more to get excited about beyond the trailers. Director Jeff Fowler has hinted at a surprise in the film that might tease some new characters set to appear in future installments. While nothing is confirmed, I’d put my bets on seeing Big the Cat make an appearance.
