Sony has finally weighed in on the lawsuit brought by Christopher Barrett, a former member of Bungie’s team.
In documents shared with Game File, PlayStation has presented text messages exchanged between Barrett and some female colleagues at Bungie, which it claims highlight a “pattern of misconduct.”
Barrett parted ways with Bungie back in March 2024 after accusations surfaced about his inappropriate behavior towards women he worked with at the studio. Following his departure, Barrett is seeking $200 million in damages, asserting that his firing prevented him from receiving $45 million he was promised as part of Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
According to Sony, Barrett was let go because he purportedly targeted a “lower-level, female employee.” Their interaction began as friendly exchanges but allegedly evolved into Barrett crossing professional boundaries by making subtle comments about her appearance and hinting at personal interest. Sony suggests that Barrett sought to create an unprofessional relationship with his victims.
The filing includes snippets of texts and messages Barrett supposedly sent to these women.
Barrett’s legal team fired back at Sony’s claims in Game File, accusing Sony of selectively presenting messages and making unfounded remarks to justify Barrett’s termination. They pointed out Sony’s omission of complete conversations and stated that the filing lacks a legitimate legal or factual premise for firing Barrett.
His lawyers remain optimistic, confident that once all the evidence is brought to light, it will become apparent that Sony orchestrated this to deprive Barrett of his position and the substantial rewards he had earned over 25 years of dedicated service.
