Square Enix is making impressive strides on the development of the third installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, as a top executive recently confirmed. In a recent update regarding the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the company expressed contentment with the project’s current trajectory, noting that no major hurdles have cropped up along the way.
Started back in June 2022, the development of this eagerly anticipated finale moved into full production following the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in February 2024. Since then, Square Enix has been sharing periodic snippets about the status of this high-profile RPG project, keeping fans on their toes.
In ongoing conversations about the franchise, Yoshinori Kitase, the well-known producer for the Final Fantasy series, and Naoki Hamaguchi, the game director, opened up to Japanese publication Famitsu. Hamaguchi shared his optimism about the progress of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, mentioning that the development is “going very well.” He emphasized that they are following the timeline without any significant issues, although he stopped short of speculating when players might get their hands on the game.
During the same conversation, Kitase highlighted that, as of 2024, the narrative for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is fully fleshed out. This is familiar territory as Hamaguchi had mentioned in November 2024 that the storyline concept was finalized. Kitase is particularly pleased with the outcome, convinced that the fans will find it equally satisfying when all is revealed.
Reflecting on the journey so far, the original Final Fantasy VII Remake took nearly five years of active development, not including its preliminary phases. However, they streamlined the process for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, managing to wrap it up in roughly four years. A big contributor to this efficient turnaround was the ability to reuse certain assets from the initial remake. Of course, the global pandemic did throw a wrench in many plans during 2020, possibly affecting their timeline further.
Looking ahead, this third and final chapter in the trio might see a release as soon as 2027. Much like its predecessors, this upcoming game is predicted to debut as a temporary exclusive for Sony’s PlayStation before expanding to PC and potentially other platforms. Today, January 23, marks Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s debut on PC, broadening its reach beyond console gamers.
