Disney has given us our first glimpse of Stitch in the upcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, and it’s, well, a tad unsettling.
Just a week ago, we were treated to a trailer for the live-action version of the beloved How to Train Your Dragon, now being turned into a profit-aimed remake by DreamWorks. Now, Disney has unveiled its latest venture with a 30-second teaser that landed yesterday. The clip mainly features Stitch in a playful yet monstrous role, akin to Godzilla, as he topples a sandcastle resembling the famous Disney castle, along with some regular sandcastles. Apart from a moment at the end where a CGI Stitch interacts with a void to display the film’s release date, which is set for May 23, 2025, there isn’t much else to chew on. It’s a pretty minimalist first look if you ask me!
The film’s synopsis remains true to the original: it tells the story of a lonely girl named Lilo and her bond with Stitch, an alien designed to bring chaos. Chris Sanders is back to lend his voice to Stitch, while Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, takes over as director.
Now let’s talk cast! Maia Kealoha, a newcomer, steps into the shoes of Lilo, and Sydney Agudong, from On My Block, joins as her older sister Nani. We’ve got Zach Galifianakis, known for The Hangover, voicing Jumba, Billy Magnussen from Game Night as Pleakley, and Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, whose role hasn’t been revealed yet, though she’s likely the Grand Councilwoman.
With less than a year to wait until the film’s release, a full-blown trailer probably isn’t too far off. Meanwhile, Disney plans to rake in the big bucks this holiday season with the release of Moana 2, hitting theaters this week.
