Blade & Sorcery, the beloved VR combat simulator that took the gaming world by storm, reached its milestone 1.0 release in June 2024. This didn’t mark an end for the thriving studio Warpfrog, though. They’ve already set their sights on developing a new game, promising it will be just as customizable as their physics-driven hit.
While details on this new project remain scarce, Warpfrog did reveal to Road to VR that they are sticking to VR, ensuring it showcases all the signature elements fans love about their games. This means we’ll see a focus on realistic physics-based interactions and a commitment to creating a rich simulation experience.
One exciting aspect of this unnamed venture is its moddability, following in the footsteps of Blade & Sorcery. For those unfamiliar, Blade & Sorcery made modding user-friendly, allowing players to tweak gameplay aspects via Nexus Mod Manager, ranging from simple enhancements like adding extra visual effects to entirely new player-made maps and weapons.
Back in October, when speaking with Meta, Warpfrog shared insights into their technical evolution. They discussed the necessity of revamping their framework—a needed move after stretching their old system to its limits during Blade & Sorcery’s early access phase.
“We need to clean up our coding and lay a fresh foundation with a new engine,” the team explained. “Our goal is to develop a new framework that’s quick and tailored to our team’s needs, marking the first instance we’re building something new from top to bottom with a full team.”
Warpfrog has come a long way from its early days, which revolved around its solo creator, ‘KospY.’ Now, boasting a nearly 30-strong team, expectations are running high for their next release.
Blade & Sorcery’s recent 1.0 update fleshed out the game significantly, adding the narrative-rich ‘Crystal Hunt’ mode. It transformed the experience from a visceral combat sandbox to a full-fledged adventure game, replete with upgrade systems, storytelling elements, and a more immersive, interconnected world.
In a Steam news post, Warpfrog expressed their enthusiasm: “The journey into our next project is where things really get exciting. Over the past five years, we’ve learned so much, and we can’t wait to unveil what we’re crafting next. Your ongoing support inspires us to develop more ambitious and immersive games.”
Warpfrog’s fans have every reason to be thrilled about what’s on the horizon. With a track record of innovation and a growing team, the studio seems poised to keep pushing the boundaries of VR gaming.
