After a wave of complaints from players over several months, an in-depth technical analysis has brought to light persistent VRR (variable refresh rate) stuttering issues affecting both PS5 and its Pro version. These hiccups are impacting titles from both Sony’s own studios and other developers. Earlier in the year, specifically February, there was a buzz as numerous LG TV users sounded the alarm over this problem. But now, the team at Digital Foundry has taken a closer look and determined that this issue goes beyond just LG displays—turns out, the glitch lies within Sony’s domain.
So, what’s the story with these PS5 and PS5 Pro VRR stuttering issues, and which games are taking the hit? According to Digital Foundry, after conducting comprehensive tests across 19 different games on varied screens, the crux of the problem surfaces mainly in games that are designed to support 120Hz VRR with free-flowing frame rates. Usually, about 20 minutes into gameplay, a distinct stutter pops up, and it does so frequently enough to rattle even the most patient players.
When this irritation arises, Digital Foundry observed a brief refresh rate jump to 120Hz. It seems that games with fluctuating frame rates momentarily slip out of VRR mode, defaulting to a static refresh rate, which then triggers the stuttering effect.
From their thorough testing, Digital Foundry has pinpointed the following games as being affected by these hiccups:
– Diablo 4
– Elden Ring
– Hogwarts Legacy
– The Last of Us Part 1
– The Last of Us Part 2
– Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
– Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
– Metaphor Refantazio
– Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Interestingly, when tested on Xbox, these third-party games don’t display the same VRR stuttering phenomena.
As of now, Sony hasn’t officially addressed the issue. However, there’s a silver lining. Mark Cerny, the brains behind PlayStation’s architecture, is a frequent guest on Digital Foundry’s platforms, so it’s likely only a matter of time before he takes note of this analysis.
Fingers crossed for a resolution in the near future.
