In an intriguing turn of events, Tencent has unveiled its new PC game, Light of Motiram, which bears a striking resemblance to Sony’s acclaimed Horizon series crafted by Guerrilla Games. This isn’t just a case of a few similar elements; Light of Motiram’s aesthetic and thematic design seem to borrow heavily from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.
### Could Sony Take Legal Action Against Tencent’s Horizon Lookalike?
Developed by Tencent’s subsidiary, Polaris Quest, Light of Motiram is promoted as an open-world adventure where players navigate a “mechanimal-ruled” landscape. In this dystopian setting, survival hinges on outwitting enormous machines that roam a post-civilization world.
As soon as the preview for Light of Motiram dropped, the gaming community was quick to draw parallels with the Palworld/Pokemon situation. Palworld’s developers, Pocketpair, found themselves embroiled in legal issues when Nintendo sued them over alleged patent infringements due to its Pokemon-like features.
Many gamers argue that given the evident similarities, Sony should challenge Tencent, accusing them of copying the Horizon series too closely. Critics, however, warn that taking legal action may be excessive and see it as a potential overstep.
While several media outlets have attempted to reach out to Sony and Tencent for comments, neither company has provided a response so far. Yet, it would indeed be surprising if Sony chose not to pursue legal action. Allowing this level of mimicry without addressing it could set a precedent that leaves their other well-loved franchises vulnerable to imitation.
