Deltarune’s creator, Toby Fox, recently shared some exciting news about Chapters 3 and 4 of the beloved episodic RPG. Both chapters are set for a simultaneous release in 2025, and fans couldn’t be more eager to dive back into the adventures of Kris, Susie, and Ralsei. It’s been over three years since Chapter 2 hit the scene, so anticipation is running high.
Deltarune retains much of the charm and gameplay style of Fox’s 2015 hit, Undertale. The complete journey is planned to span seven chapters, with the first two being released in 2018 and 2021 to widespread acclaim, thanks to the game’s witty humor, engaging characters, and memorable soundtrack—all composed by Fox. Last December, Toby Fox mentioned that work on Chapters 3 and 4 was nearing completion. However, the process of polishing, bug testing, and translation needed additional time. Fans are now setting their calendars for 2025, hopeful but realistic about the release timeline after Fox’s latest update on the progress.
In a recent update on BlueSky, Fox delved into the finer details of how Chapters 3 and 4 are shaping up, particularly concerning console testing. He admitted that while there are notably fewer bugs now, there’s still a mountain of work ahead, and testing on the PlayStation 5 hasn’t even started. Additionally, the team is focused on making sure that save files from the demo will seamlessly transition to the main game on consoles—a feature they’ve only recently been able to implement. Although this might sound like a setback, it’s reassuring to know that Fox is committed to releasing the new chapters in 2025.
Reflecting on past announcements, Fox revealed in July 2024 that Chapter 4 was completely playable, although some enhancements were still in order. This dual-release is a shift from the previous strategy where Chapters 1 and 2 were first available on PC before being adapted for consoles. Meanwhile, Chapter 5 is already in development with steady progress, as Fox noted in December 2024.
While Deltarune has earned a loyal following, it’s yet to reach the iconic status of Undertale, a game that continues to resonate with fans nearly a decade post-release. Undertale’s distinctive approach, allowing players to navigate battles with non-violence, has carried over into Deltarune, and the community is eagerly waiting to see how else Fox might weave elements from his past masterpiece into this new saga.
