Rumors are swirling that Ubisoft is working on an exciting new game called “Alterra,” which is expected to follow in the footsteps of popular games like Animal Crossing. With games such as Stardew Valley, Coral Island, and Castaway Paradise already engaging many players on Xbox, Ubisoft will certainly have its work cut out for it in this competitive space.
According to Insider Gaming, Alterra is being developed as a social simulation game featuring voxel-based design elements reminiscent of both Animal Crossing and Minecraft. This means players should expect an island home populated by quirky, Funko Pop-style characters known as Matterlings. The game promises Minecraft-like building mechanics, giving players the creative freedom to construct their ideal island paradise.
Beyond the comforts of their island abode, players in Alterra will be able to venture out to various worlds, each with its own biome, teeming with unique materials to collect. Each world is not only distinct in theme but also home to Matterlings with large heads, inspired by fictional and real-world animals, along with other thematic inhabitants and resources.
The report suggests that Ubisoft intends to continually update the game with new Matterlings, each offering multiple variations in appearance and attire. While interaction with other players seems to be a feature, the specifics of multiplayer gameplay are still under wraps. Perhaps players will eventually get the chance to explore each other’s meticulously crafted worlds.
Excitingly enough, Alterra has its roots in a previously canceled voxel-based project and has been in development at Ubisoft Montreal for the past year and a half. Leading the charge is Patrick Redding, well-known for his work on Gotham Knights, with veteran Ubisoft producer Fabien Lhéraud overseeing the project.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft fans are also abuzz with the latest reveals about Assassin’s Creed Shadows, shedding light on some intriguing stealth gameplay elements. But back to Alterra—what do you think about the prospect of a Ubisoft-created social sim? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
