Set within the desolate “Zone of Alienation,” STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl immerses players in a world overshadowed by the remnants of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. This eerie zone teems with supernatural anomalies that defy logic, ferocious beasts thirsting for blood, and a host of genetically altered animals on the prowl. True to form for any post-apocalyptic setting, the Zone harbors numerous warring factions, each with distinct goals that influence both the land and its settlers.
The STALKER series is renowned for delving into profound philosophical questions, often focused on the essence of humanity and the lengths people will go to fulfill their ambitions. It’s rare to find a faction that’s categorically “good” in this universe, though many would argue that Monolith stands as the most malevolent of the group.
Now, diving into the lore of the Monolith faction, it traces back to a group of Soviet scientists known as “The Group” who began their secretive experiments in the Exclusion Zone at the time of the Chornobyl Disaster in 1986. The secluded environment of the Zone was ideal for their dangerous experiments, which centered around the Noosphere, a mysterious energy field believed to influence human consciousness and emotional states.
Even after the Soviet Union disbanded in 1991, The Group pressed on with their research on the Noosphere within the Zone. This led to a pivotal breakthrough where seven of these scientists opted to unify their minds, creating a singular Common Consciousness. Encapsulated in stasis pods, their minds melded into a single entity capable of navigating and interacting with the Noosphere.
In 2006, the Common Consciousness made a bold attempt to manipulate the Noosphere, inadvertently causing a second Chornobyl calamity. This catastrophe ushered in a breach in the Noosphere, giving rise to bizarre anomalies. The entity endeavored to harness the newfound power of the breach but faced frequent disruptions from Stalkers hunting for precious artifacts within the Zone.
To safeguard itself and the breach, the Common Consciousness crafted a defense by influencing a group of fervent devotees called Monolith. These zealots were convinced that a mystical “Wish Granter” was located at the Zone’s center, and that protecting it was their sacred duty at any cost.
Grasping the opportunity, the Common Consciousness exerted mind control over this former band of Stalkers. Together, they engineered what would come to be known as the “Brain Scorcher,” a formidable radio antenna capable of luring and brainwashing any Stalkers who ventured too close to the Zone’s core. These indoctrinated Stalkers transformed into Monolith’s dedicated and aggressive soldiers.
However, not even Monolith’s formidable might could endure indefinitely within the Zone’s unforgiving environment. In STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, the protagonist, Strelok, manages to infiltrate the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Rejecting C-Consciousness’ offer to join them, Strelok dismantles the stasis pods housing the seven scientists, likely ending the C-Consciousness and leading to the downfall of Monolith, at least in its familiar form.
STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl showcases a dramatically altered Chornobyl Exclusion Zone subsequent to the massive second blast in 2006. With deadly mutants, perilous anomalies, and feuding factions, survival in the Zone is a treacherous endeavor. Nonetheless, the allure of immensely valuable artifacts draws many, aptly named S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s, into the Zone, driven by the lure of fortune or uncovering the truths hidden within Chornobyl’s core.
