As Disney Dreamlight Valley continues to enrich its gaming experience with new characters, players and developers at Gameloft should remember that there’s a finite pool from Disney’s animated library. Eventually, a day will come when looking beyond the beloved realms of Walt Disney Animation and Pixar Studios for fresh faces will be necessary. Instead of jumping to hugely popular live-action sagas like Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, embracing something closer to Disney’s roots, such as the Descendants franchise, could be a more fitting direction.
Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOMS) and animated shows from the Disney Channel provide a trove of recognizable content for Disney Dreamlight Valley’s community. These offerings are steeped in fantasy, making them better suited as additions to the game than a live-action series like Hannah Montana. Among these, Descendants stands out as an exceptionally successful contender from Disney’s DCOM collection.
The Descendants series tells the story of the children of infamous Disney villains, focusing on Mal, the daughter of Maleficent, Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen, Jay, Jafar’s son, and Carlos, the son of Cruella DeVille. These kids grow up isolated on the Isle of the Lost, until Prince Ben, the offspring of Beauty and the Beast, invites them to attend Auradon Prep on the mainland. While their villainous parents urge them to continue a life of evil, the first film reveals their shift towards good. Spanning three main films and a prequel titled Descendants: The Rise of Red, released in the summer of 2024 on Disney+, this franchise’s themes echo strongly with Disney Dreamlight Valley’s focus on villain redemption. This alignment reinforces why Descendants would be a perfect thematic addition to the game.
Some players might hesitate to welcome a live-action property or alternate versions of existing characters into Disney Dreamlight Valley. However, Descendants smoothly navigates these concerns. The animated series Descendants: Wicked World offers a basis for character design adaptation, aligning with Disney Dreamlight Valley’s traditional style of interpreting animated characters. Without such an animated reference, incorporating live-action entities could result in unfortunate design choices. Using Wicked World as a blueprint ensures consistency with the game’s visual narrative.
Already, two of the villainous parents in Descendants, Jafar and Maleficent, either have made or will be making appearances in Disney Dreamlight Valley. They arrive not as Descendants characters but as their classic Disney personas. Introducing a Descendants Realm could differentiate these characters significantly, establishing their unique identities within the game’s universe.
Engaging with Disney Dreamlight Valley’s lore allows for accommodating different versions of beloved characters, paving a creative path for incorporating new content. Although the shift beyond Walt Disney Animation and Pixar might not happen immediately, adding Descendants to Dreamlight Valley seems a logical, thematic evolution that enhances the gaming journey.
