Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios made waves with their announcement that Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is hitting PS5 and PC platforms on June 13th. Interestingly, despite showcasing the game on the PSVR 2 in the past, any mention of support for this platform has now mysteriously vanished, causing quite a stir among fans and industry observers alike.
At PAX West 2024, the game delighted attendees with a hands-on demo on the PSVR 2, suggesting it would be a versatile offering, blending both VR and traditional screen gameplay. Known for its solid track record in virtual reality, Steel Wool Studios has been a notable name since it started in 2012, thanks to an early funding boost of $5 million from HTC. They’ve rolled out several VR hits, including Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue (2023) and the widely-acclaimed FNAF: Help Wanted series.
However, after revealing the release date for their newest FNAF installment, references to PSVR 2 compatibility have been removed from all promotional materials. This includes changes on the PlayStation Store page for FNAF: Secret of the Mimic, which online archives suggest once featured optional PSVR 2 support now conspicuously absent.
The last known mention of PSVR 2 compatibility came from an official PlayStation post about the game’s release date on February 12th, which has been taken down. What remains unclear is whether the lack of VR support is temporary or a hint at a different strategy altogether. Questions linger not just for console players, but also for PC users eager to know if Epic Games Store and Steam versions will offer VR options.
Despite reaching out to Steel Wool Studios, we haven’t yet received an official statement. Rest assured, we’re keeping our ears to the ground, ready to update you once we have more concrete information. Whether this represents a postponed VR launch or a shift in their release strategy is yet to be seen.
In FNAF: Secret of the Mimic, players will dive into the eerie depths of Murray’s Costume Manor, trying to uncover the enigma surrounding Edwin Murray, a solitary inventor. The game teases the Mimic as a prototype endoskeleton, capable of taking on any disguise, even manifesting your most frightening nightmares.
"Equipped merely with your cunning, a handful of gadgets, and a scantily detailed corporate brief, you’ll strive to secure Fazbear’s cutting-edge prototype," the game teases, "all while deciphering puzzling clues and evading a persistent shadow intent on banishing all intruders."
