There’s a new contender in the world of XR headsets, and it’s another entry carrying the ‘Vision’ name. Meet Vivo’s latest tech venture—the Vivo Vision.
Vivo may not be as well-known globally as some smartphone titans, but it’s certainly a major player in its own right. Known primarily for its smart, mid-range phones, the Chinese company’s reputation has steadily grown, consistently placing it among the top smartphone creators by market share.
Today, at the Boao Forum for Asia held in Hainan Province, China, Vivo unveiled its first foray into the XR realm. The company’s debut in this tech segment represents what Vivo claims to be a cornerstone in their broader mission to explore both robotics and XR technologies. Vivo describes this venture as reaching “a significant milestone” in their journey into mixed reality.
While details about the Vivo Vision are still somewhat scant at this stage—the official launch isn’t expected until mid-2025—we can tell you that many specifics remain under wraps. Information like the specs, operating system, release date, availability on the global market, and pricing are all questions that have yet to be answered.
However, what was on display at the Boao Forum suggested a strong inspiration drawn from Apple’s Vision Pro. The headset showcased design features like a distinctive head strap, a digital crown button, and an external battery attached magnetically—elements reminiscent of its Apple counterpart.
In terms of software, Vivo’s smartphones generally operate on a modified Android system, with Funtouch OS for international models and Origin OS for the Chinese market. With the introduction of this XR device, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to wonder if Vivo is planning to utilize Google’s forthcoming Android XR OS. This possible partnership might align with Samsung’s highly anticipated ‘Project Moohan,’ although, at this stage, that’s just speculation.
We are seeing a noticeable trend emerge with Chinese manufacturers bringing Vision Pro-like devices to market. Play for Dream previously captured attention at CES 2025 with its own MR headset, earning accolades from industry professionals. Among them, former Quest engineer Amanda Watson regarded it as “absolutely the best all around HMD demo I saw on the floor today.”
It looks like Vivo is set to keep us guessing, but one thing’s clear—the company is definitely making waves in the XR space with its upcoming Vivo Vision.
