Since the resounding success of Hogwarts Legacy early in 2023, Warner Bros. Games hasn’t exactly been riding a wave of triumphs. Despite Mortal Kombat 1’s respectable performance, bringing its usual thrilling and brutal action, the company faced setbacks with the disappointing relaunch of Multiversus and the notorious fiasco of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Currently, Warner Bros. Games’ president David Haddad is preparing to step down from his role.
Throughout his ten-year leadership, Haddad has been at the helm during the production of notable titles. While he’s certainly had some faults, he also brought us acclaimed games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Injustice 2, and the popular Mortal Kombat 11, alongside the more recent Mortal Kombat 1. Hogwarts Legacy may not have wowed all critics, but it stands as one of Warner’s most significant hits. Yet, these accomplishments couldn’t overshadow the high-profile failures. Rocksteady, famed for crafting stellar single-player experiences, opted instead for the ill-fated live-service model with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, slamming the brakes on new content just a year post-launch.
Even with its strong collection of fighting games, including the much-anticipated Multiversus, WB Games found the game struggling to hold onto its player base. Despite an initial buzz during its early access phase and subsequent relaunch, retaining that excitement proved challenging.
Now, David Haddad is on his way out. In his words to Variety, he remarked, “It has been an absolute pleasure working on and building our iconic gaming franchises. I will continue to be an enthusiastic supporter of this talented team’s future endeavors. I look forward to working on the next chapter of my career and will always be grateful for my time with Warner Bros. Games.” He’ll remain with the company for the next three months, assisting in the search and onboarding of his successor.
Looking ahead, unless WB has some secret projects tucked away ready to drop this year, their future slate seems a bit sparse. This was acknowledged by another executive who bid farewell to Haddad, highlighting that David chose a strategic timing when the release schedule is lighter, minimizing disruptions and easing the transition as the team gears up for its next blockbuster.
Warner Bros. has announced that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is high on their list of priorities, though we’re likely a couple of years away from seeing it. Another upcoming major title is the Wonder Woman game from Monolith, the studio behind Middle-earth, but news on this project has been scant since its 2021 reveal.
