Unlike Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth isn’t going to have any DLC, and the director has a pretty solid reason for that decision.
When Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth hit the shelves, a lot of fans were expecting news on potential DLCs, given that Remake had some while everyone waited for the sequel. But in a recent sit-down with the Daily Star, director Naoki Hamaguchi put those speculations to bed, explaining the no-DLC stance. “We definitely do hear the desire from fans, the voices out there that want that kind of thing,” Hamaguchi acknowledged. “I understand it completely, but I think, from my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible.”
He went on to explain that they’ve prioritized getting the third installment ready. “So that’s why we’ve decided not to focus the development resources on creating additional extra episodes for DLC at the moment. We really are putting all our efforts into getting the third game out as quickly as we can. So for the moment, that’s where we’re focusing our time.” You have to admit, that’s a pretty valid point!
Now, while the Yuffie DLC in Remake served as a nice bridge between games, I wonder about Rebirth and characters like Cid or Vincent Valentine. Could they have standalone adventures? Well, especially with Vincent, there’s always the hope that Square Enix might be cooking up a remaster of Dirge of Cerberus, much like Crisis Core: Reunion. Here’s hoping for all you Dirge fans out there!
On another note, our own Dom caught up with Hamaguchi earlier this week to talk about plans for mini-games in the final part of the series. And don’t fret, changes are in the works!
